Braunschweig tourist information
Braunschweig is an ideal location for tours through an cultural interesting region. Braunschweig has 250.000 inhabitants and is located in the south of the heath, in the northern foothills of the Harz and approximately 60 km east of Hanover with its international airport. In the region around the city of Henry the Lion are more than a hundred romantic sights to be found. Today's townscapes character is still stamped by the erstwhile middle-aged structure. The numerous places with its churches indicate the five municipal areas (Altstadt, Hagen, Sack, Altewiek und Neustadt) out of which the city once grew together. In modern times the traditional marketplaces were supplemented with attractive glass roofed shopping passages and a pedestrian precinct. Especially worth seeing is the castle place with the St. Blasii's Cathedral and the Dankwarderode's castle in its romantic style, surrounded by ensembles of half-timbered houses. The first documented mention of Braunschweig was found in a document of the Magni-church in 1031. Already in the 12th century Braunschweig came up to a special importance because Henry the Lion chose the city because of its central position to be his royal residence. Therewith the development to become a middle-aged metropolis was initiated.

A permanent exhibition shows in different sections the history around Braunschweig from it's early history to it's presence. There are also always alternating theme exhibitions. Other parts of the museum are located in the exhibition centre "Hinter Ägidien" with a section for a Jewish Museum, for prehistory and early history in Wolfenbüttel and for folklore in Bortfeld.

Existing for more than 250 years Braunschweig’s technical university is one of the oldest in Germany. With 7000 employees in research centres the city is formed by its „spirit of research“. In the field of natural science with its about 13500 students and its 250 professors the basics are innovation and know-how, fantasy and creativity. Institutes of the basic research and application research are equally ranked side by side. Discipline between the different fields of the research centres is documented in a line of super ordinate research centres, for example the Centre of Biology or also the Centre for Air and Space Travel with activities on the regional airport of Braunschweig.
