Bielefeld, the economic and cultural centre of East Westphalia, is beautifully located in the hilly uplands of the Teutoburg Forest. Interesting attractions in the vicinity: the "Externsteine", a monumental group of rocks up to 40m high; the Westphalian Open-Air Museum in Detmold with over 100 restored historical half-timbered buildings; the Hermann Monument commemorating the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest between the Germanic tribes and the Romans.
The city’s many attractions for young people include discos with a variety of music styles, facilities for twenty different sports, several go-kart tracks and Cine Star and Cinemaxx cinemas and a rich selection of live music events.
