The hotel adjoins a 1643 residence named Ermelerhaus, which contains the hotel's contemporary fine-dining restaurant and gilded original salons. Colorful, contemporary guestrooms include down comforters and pillows, wall-mounted desks, wireless Internet access, and bathrooms with sinks by Philippe Starck.

When the East German regime proposed razing the house to make way for commercial development, preservationists arranged for it to be moved 183 meters (200 yards) to its present site in a row of elegant 18th-century houses facing a channel of the Spree River.

The hotel itself includes a black-floored lobby with acrylic columns, yellow- and red-leather chairs, a wood-burning fireplace (lighted during the holiday season) in a red wall, and an oval, light-colored wood reception desk--a suitably contemporary, gallery-like setting for displaying 300 colorful works by Georg Baselitz, a noted contemporary German artist.

Light-colored wood floor, contemporary red-and-blue upholstered chairs, white table linens, yellow-leather bar stools. Buffet breakfast daily. Lunch/dinner menu includes pickled goose with red cabbage salad and ravioli, beef consommé with oxtail crêpe, roasted halibut with red rice and roasted plums, and warm chocolate ravioli with frozen hazelnut parfait and candied kumquats. Seasonal specials, including autumn/winter game dishes.
