Grown over centuries, the former Margravial residence is world famous today for the annual Richard Wagner Festival. The biggest city in Upper Franconia is today a modern university and conference town, has a strong economy and is well on its way to be the high tech centre of the region.

Our Margravial Opera House is the most beautiful Baroque theatre in Europe and it is officially nominated by the German Government to become one of the UNESCO World Heritage sights in Germany. Visitors will see fascinating palaces, the historic gardens of the Hermitage with its mysterious grottoes and water fountains, the Richard-Wagner-Festspielhaus with its unique acoustics and 20 interesting museums. A great number of festivals offer music, theatre, and art on a very high level.

Bayreuth is the gateway to the Fichtel Mountains and the romantic Fränkische Schweiz, it is easily reached by car on the national motorways (Autobahn) A 9 and A 70. The new interCityExpress links Bayreuth with Nueremberg; Hof; Plauen; Zwickau; Chemnitz and Dresden every two hours. As well, the Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) links Bayreuth and Nuremberg with fast trains every hour. International connections are ensured by several airlines with daily flights from different cities to Nuremberg and hourly connections by train to Bayreuth.
