Bautzen tourist information
It is fresh, vital and full of life: the city has good reason to smile down without a care in the world from its rocky plateau above the river Spree. In the 3rd century, Bautzen was an East Germanic settlement and, in 1002, it was mentioned for the first time in official documents as "Budissin". This means Bautzen is almost a thousand years old. 17 towers, bastions and a city wall that is almost completely preserved in its original state, lend the city a distinctive Medieval atmosphere. Even when you exit the motorway, you are greeted by the silhouette of Bautzen’s old city with its ancient ingenious water pumping system. St. Peter’s Cathedral is the only "ecumenical church" in East Germany: the Catholics have been using the chancel and the Protestants the nave since 1542. The Bautzen cathedral tower can be climbed right up to the towerkeeper’s lodgings. Bautzen is today the hub of the Oberlausitz Sorbs’ cultural and political life. It is where the "Domowina", the Sorb council, the Sorb National Assembly and the German-Sorb Folk Theatre are located. The Bautzen Theatre is the only bi-lingual theatre in Germany. The city and surrounding region are a tourist attraction during the Easter Festival . At Easter markets, artistically-decorated Easter eggs and the traditional Easter ride bring the Sorb culture to life.
