Bad Doberan tourist information
The idyllic small town of Bad Doberan is only a few kilometer from the Baltic Coast. Its name originally derived from the founding of the Cistercian monastery near Althof, first mentioned in records in 1171. After the Althof monastery was destroyed, the Doberan monastery was built on the present site. The town enjoyed a significant increase in popularity after Duke Friedrich Franz I. of Mecklenburg adopted it as his summer residence. The first German seaside resort, Heiligendamm, was founded outside the town gates in 1793 and the first German horse racetrack was established there in 1822. The town center is characterized by many Gothic and Classicist buildings; visitors from all over the world come here to see the former monastery churches, such as the Doberan Minster which is one of the most impressive examples of North German brick architecture. Another tourist attraction is the ride on the "Molli" narrow gauge railway from Bad Doberan through Heiligendamm to the Baltic resort of Kuehlungsborn.
