Augsburg was founded by the roman empire in 15 B.C. and flourished as an important city of trade and commerce during the Renaissance. Back in 1468 the first books were printed in Augsburg ; the pamphlets issued by the Fuggers are deemed to be the forerunners of the press.

Today Augsburg is a university-town, the city has an Exhibition Centre and hosts international trade fairs.

Augsburg is easily accessible by frequent trains, by plane and by car via the Autobahn A 8.

Famous places to see are the Fuggerei (the oldest welfare-housing area in the world), the town hall, Maximilianstraße, the cathedral and the Ulrich-basilica. The old part of the city provides a very special atmosphere due to numerous truly romantic corners, little canals, lots of bridges... For many people Augsburg is the most northern town of Italy.

Apart from the City of Augsburg, the Augsburg Region comprises the neighbouring rural districts of Aichach-Friedberg and Augsburg. The overall population of approxinately 850,000 makes it the centre of the area of Bavarian Swabia and the third-largest conurbation in Bavaria.

The district of Aichach-Friedberg is situated between Augsburg and Munich. It is famous for being the cradle of the Wittelsbach Dynasty. For gourmets, the area offers fantastic asparagus in spring.

The rural district of Augsburg, situated between the river Danube and the eastern Allgäu, is a popular area for hiking and biking in flashing green forests. The "Stauden"-Area is were the Mozart Family springs from.
