Vannes tourist information
Well before Roman times, the Vénètes, one of the Celtic tribes which had moved into Brittany, made their capital here. Snuggled into the corner of the “Little Sea” (the gulf of “Mor-bihan”), the position had undoubted strategic and economic advantages. The Vénètes were the most powerful tribe in ancient Armorique and ruled most of the European Atlantic coast, thanks to their excellent fleet and sailing skills. Today, Vannes is still a prosperous town and has kept a lot of the charm of its past. The centre of town is rich in beautiful old houses, between 200-500 years old. The impressive ramparts have become a beautiful garden, but retain the atmosphere of a fortified town, protected from Norman invasion.
Take the time to lose yourself as you walk through the paved narrow streets, where history is ever present. In the summer, when the tables flood the café terraces, the Place Gambetta takes on a rather Italian feel. Have a drink on this crescent-shaped town square, surrounded by fine white houses. Then take the Porte Saint Vincent into the old town.
Of course, Vannes is also the perfect base to explore the Gulf of Morbihan by boat, with its numerous islands. Being almost completely surrounded by land, the climate is particularly warm with a deep blue sky for much of the year. All around Vannes, you’ll find megaliths and wild, beautiful nature. This little stretch of Brittany is steeped in history.
