If Montpellier was any closer to the sea, it would be one of my favorite cities ever. A charming college town, it has historic buildings and statues at every turn, beautifully landscaped parks, and narrow winding cobblestone alleys. It is the kind of place to wander and explore. There are some run down, seedier parts, but the students are out at all area in all parts of the city, giving a a vibrant feel.

After having lunch or coffee in Montpellier, think of visiting an old little store called Llinas at 19 rue de Verdun, just off place de la Comedie. This 100 year old store (25 years with the Alignan family) has all sorts of things for the professional and amateur cook: Pans, porcelain, crystal, laguiole and sebatier knifes, ceralic vinegar pots and all sorts of kitchen accessories. This little store also has a gifts and games section - Petanque balls, classic wooden board games, billiard and bridge. To get there: Leave Place de la Comedie onto Rue de Verdun, between Monoprix and the pharmacy. Head down the street, cross the little newly stone paved area and you will see Llinas on the left. (The store may be in the process of "relooking") Llinas has gifts, games, kitchen stuff and loto. Neat little store, worth a visit - Jean Luc, the frenchman who runs the store lived in the US for many years before returning to France; he will glad to speak English or French with you.

Andy Peck has been in Montpellier

Just spent 6 days in March 2004 at the beautifully decorated and friendly Hotel du Parc. When we arrived on the Sunday we were probably a litle disapointed with a typically gruby French city that seemed extremely quiet on a cold grey day. However on Monday when the sun came out, so did the people and the Place de la Comedie became a vibrant and wonderfull place, to sit at one of the cafe's and watch the world go bye. We soon fell in love with Montpellier with its large pedestrian areas including tree lined boulevards and parks and the wonderfull tram system that made getting around the city so easey. On the down side parts of the old city are dirty and untidy with an unacceptable amount of dog dirt on the pavements and graffiti on almost every building but don't let this put you off visiting a city that has a lot to offer and has an ability to grow on you the longer you stay. We used the train to visit Marseille and Carcassone and enjoyed them both but thought that we had picked the best place to use as our base.
