Marseille was a disappointment. There is a vast tenement district that frankly felt unsafe to walk through. The city was filthy, and it was difficult to enjoy the architecture when you had to be constantly vigilant about what you were stepping in. the main tourist area is rather small, and just a few blocks outside of it in any direction becomes somewhat dicey. For a beautiful, clean safe town in the area, I would head for Montpellier instead.
