Gordes tourist information
Gordes is the most typical Provençal village . It is then perfectly normal that Gordes is officially considered as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Standing on a cliff where the castle and the large trees protect it, Gordes towers above the Imergue and Coulon valleys. It's a dream for the tourists who nearly invade the valleys in the summertime.
The golden-light reflected by the walls of the village has always attracted the painters’ attention. André Lothe, Marc Chagall then Victor Vasarely all contributed to the cultural heritage of the city. Firstly inhabited by the Gauls, its name “Vorda” meant High village.
Some ancient city walls of the twelth century can be seen between the Savoie door and the Vieux Gate. Carved inside the cliff, the Terrasses theater hosts the Gordes evenings in the summertime. But the castle is still the central part of the visit.
The former medieval fortress is said to have been built on Roman ruins. In 1525, Bertrand de Simiane gave it its nowadays look. The huge aspect of the buiding is somehow tampered by the inside, which is much more sophisticated. The gate ornaments and the gigantic fireplace on the second floor are simply gorgeous. The three higher floors contain a museum dedicated to Dutch painter Pol Mara.
During World War II, Gordes became an active patriot center and was therefore bombed by the Germans, who fortunately failed to destroy it. The population received the War Cross in 1948.
