Fuveau tourist information
Fuveau may be able to trace its origins back nearly 2,000 years, but it only truly entered history at the end of the 11th century, when its name was recorded for the first time in writing. From the heart of the Provençal countryside, its inhabitants lived from traditional Mediterranean resources: olives, wine and wheat. In the second half of the 19th century, mineral resources transformed the economic landscape of the community. For a number of decades, the population turned towards this new activity of industrial coal extraction, but it still retains its rural soul. Important demographic growth due partly to the proximity of Marseille has swollen the population to 8,000. With a rich historical past and many cultural associations, Fuveau offers numerous tourist activities, in particular the great spectacle «2,000 Years of History in Provence» with over 400 actors, and a writers' salon, a major local event assembling 60 personalities from the literary world every year. Looking at the village, one's regard remains for a long time fixed on the bell tower of the hilltop church and the houses nestling around it. Natural sentinel of the Upper Arc Valley, standing proudly across from the Sainte Victoire Mountain, the sight of the village inspires a visit.
