Eze tourist information
Eze is definitely a strange village. Small perched medieval town and typical azuréenne seaside resort all in one.
At an altitude of 429 metres, the town is a collection of old houses snuggled high up against each other. This takes us back to ancient times where it had to defend itself against various aggressors. The ruins of the 15th century castle still crowns the cliff. It testifies to the passed offences of man: in 1706, Louis XIV ordered his soldiers to dismantle the fortress, then it was the turn of the French artillery during the Austrian War of Succession to completely destroy this edifice. The same bombardments also destroyed the parish church that was later rebuilt in Baroque style at the end of the 18th century. Cactus, aloes and the other succulents of the "Jardin Exotique", created in 1949, surrounds the ruins of the castle.
By wandering through the history filled walls of the village, let yourself be guided by the smell of the bougainvillaeas and the merry lapping of the water in the stone fountains. As if in a dream, you will cross the decorated façade of the very beautiful house of Require and the chapel of the Saint Croix, called la Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, where the inhabitants voted for the return of Eze to France.
From the village, you can also visit "Eze bord-de-mer" by taking the Nietzsche pedestrian road. This path was named after the German philosopher in memory of the affection he had for this walk between the sea and the mountain.
This seaside resort, renowned since Antiquity for the peacefulness of its waters, has managed to maintain the charm of the Belle Epoque era. The arrival of the railway line in 1866, contributed to enticing numerous personalities here. From the Russian Prince Stroganov, the President Poincaré, to the writer Victorien Sardou and the painter Sakarof. Times have changed and today the members of the group U2 can sometimes be seen on the beach in summer!
