Chamonix tourist information

Chamonix France

The Chamonix Valley is approximately 20 kilometers and nestled between the towering Mont-Blanc range to the south and the Aiguilles Rouges mountains to the north. The birthplace of mountaineering over 200 years ago, Chamonix is still considered the ultimate place to be for all those who share a love of nature and the mountains.

Chamonix is nestled in the heart of the Northern Alps at the crossroads of the three frontiers separating France, Italy and Switzerland. The highway network covering this region gathers at the entrance of the valley via the Autoroute Blance E25 - A40. By this way and thanks to the Mont Blanc Tunnel Chamonix is surprisingly close to the great cities of Europe, especially Geneva, Lyon and Turin and their international airports. At specific times of the year, the fast TGV train comes to the front door of the valley at the train station of Saint-Gervais Le Fayet.

Chamonix is situated in the north-westerly part of the Alps, just 15 km from the Swiss border via the Col des Montets and 15 km from Italy via the Mont-Blanc tunnel. The border of these three countries unites at 3820 meters on the summit Mont Dolent. Chamonix and its valley are dominated by the Mont Blanc chain to the south and the Aiguilles Rouges (red peaks) to the north. The town centre is situated at an altitude of 1035 meters and the top of the valley lies the village of Le Tour (1462 meters). The Arve, the main river of the upper Savoy, takes its source at the Col de Balme and flows through the Chamonix valley and on down to Geneva where it joins the Rhône. The resident population of Chamonix is over 10,000 inhabitants. The number of visitors fluctuates enormously during the tourist season, in Summer up to 100,000 visitors per day and in Winter approximately 60,000. Chamonix is twinned with Aspen (America), Davos (Switzerland), Fujiyoshida (Japan), Cilaos (La Reunion), Garmish Partenkirchen (Germany) and Courmayeur (Italy).
