Carnac tourist information

Carnac is an extraordinary megalithic site, where the wealth of its historical past is united with the pleasures associated with its seaside resort.

The Carnac alignment site is the biggest megalithic site in the world. It dates back to about 4,500 BC. More than 3000 menhirs stand here. Important safeguard measures were taken in 1991. This has helped restore the surrounding soils and the vegetation has regenerated. At the Ménec alignments, there are 1099 standing stones in 11 lines, which are 1165m (¾ of a mile) long. Those at Kermario are just as impressive. Among them are some of the finest specimens. You will find an information office here. Their continuation, the Kerlescan alignments, has 555 menhirs. The Kercado dolmen is also a must, as is the Mané Kerioned site and the Moustoir tumulus. The J. Miln Z. Le Rouzic Prehistory Museum, 10 place de la Chapelle, has the greatest collection in the world concerning megaliths. It goes back to 450,000 years BC. and then recounts the different stages of civilization up to the Gallo-Roman period (Tel : 33 (0)2.97.52.22.04). Shows can be seen relating to these stones from another era, at the Archeoscope, in front of the Ménec alignments (Tel. 33 (0)2.97.52.07.49).

They are ideal for relaxing. You will be captivated by Légenèse, Ty Bihan, Saint-Colomban, or the south facing Grande Plage (Big beach). You can also stop by at the town of Carnac and admire the Saint-Cornély church which is a very beautiful Renaissance building. In July and August, concert every Tuesday at the church.
