Biarritz tourist information
The brave Basque whalers have long since put away their harpoons in the broom cupboard; there is nothing left of those epic times of whale hunting. True, men still leave today for Newfoundland to bring back cod in their nets. But it is not for that that people come back to Biarritz. In the C.19th tourists started flocking to the town and they keep on coming in droves today .Obviously, those pale-complexioned romantics will come and bemoan the passing of the splendours of the Second Empire. The residence that the future Empress, Eugénie de Montijo, had built for herself (in the shape of an E , if you please !) has been converted into a luxury hotel. Today’s adventurers, on the other hand, their skins furrowed with sun and brine, will set out to conquer the ocean on their surfboards. Biarritz is the French surfing capital. In the Marine Museum, children will appreciate the sea life and particularly the seals whose daily feeding time always causes a sensation.
The life-giving ocean. Whether you have decided to refresh the bodies of your young schoolchildren, anaemic after nine months at school or to look after your own bodies, the wonders of balneotherapy no longer need proving. In Biarritz many formulas are available, from a day’s session to a whole month’s.
And in the evening you will easily ferret out a good restaurant to enjoy some local specialities. Chipirons (cuttlefish) in their own ink or bulls’ cojones (testicles) served with mince. There is no accounting for taste, eh ?
