Beaulieu occupies the site of a prehistoric site and antique Greek port of Anao. The city was increased then by the Romans who had the leisure to build marble residences and mosaics. The aglomeration was shaven in IIIème century, in IVème a small monastery was built whose first abbot was Saint-Hospice. Lombards shaved the monastery in VIème and the inhabitants took refuge on cliff of the plate the Michaelmas (Large Cornice). They will go down again to the current site only at the end of XIIIème century. Resulting from XIIème and francized after 1860 to become Beaulieu, Napoleon Bonaparte, conquered by the attraction of the site, confirmed his name "Bellolocco" 1860 - Beaulieu, hamlet of Villefranche, attract by the road and the railroad, English, French, Russians of Gotha, crowned heads... The inhabitants of the time see concretizing the winter tourist destiny of the city. 1891 - Beaulieu becomes common independent of Villefranche. At the beautiful time, Beaulieu elegant winter station accomodates the most famous characters who affectionnent this high place of prestige society man. Most known are: LEOPOLE II, GUILLAUME II, 1st PRINCE OF WALES, queens of Italy and of Portugal, Marquis of SALISBURY (1st Minister Britannique), MARINONI (inventive of the Rotary printing-press), Theodore REINACH (archaeologist which made build the Kérylos Villa), Gordon BENNETT (owner of the New York Herald), Princess GALITZINE, the Count TOLSTOI, Gustave EIFFEL. The First World War causes the departure of the famous residents, but the tourist vocation is established. The station grows in prestige by accomodating new monarchs and princes of blood, GUSTAVE II of Suéde, Helene of Italy, Elisabeth of Belgium and LEOPOLE III.
Between the two wars, the economic and sociological evolution gives birth to a promising season from summer. The sun should not only "heat the season of winter", one requires of him from now on "to bronze for the season of summer". 1991 celebrated first Centenaire of the Commune.
