MAGNIFICENT! Wonderful to walk around, especially Sun. mornings. The Palais de Papes is stunning, especially while enjoying a beverage in an outdoor cafe on the plaza facing it, viewing it as the sun sets and the stone walls turn a beautiful soft tan color. The interior tour is very worthwhile, but be prepared to see nothing like you have seen or expected to see in a palace-it is very bare; furnishings, tapestries, etc. are nearly all gone, victim I think of the French revolution. I have been to Avignon about ten times, including the July festival, and it is terrific. A Rhone river dinner cruise is a great way to top off a day of visiting the city.
