Rovaniemi Finland
Rovaniemi, the capital of the Province of Lapland, is located on the Arctic Circle about 800 km north of Helsinki. Regular train and bus services link Rovaniemi with the rest of Finland, and there is an international airport. The population of the area is about 62,000.
There are four clearly defined seasons in Lapland. Each year, the changing seasons create a different natural drama, contributing significantly to Lapland’s bewitching power. It’s hard to say which of these dramas is the most magnificent. Is it autumn, with its brilliant colours? Is it the still dark blue of winter, or the glittering spirit of spring? Or is it the festive light of summer?
Snow cover lasts for an average of 180 days a year (November – April). The lowest measured frost reading is –45.3 °C. The highest temperature ever recorded is +30.6 °C. The midnight sun is visible from 6 June – 7 July. The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is a natural light phenomenon that can be seen illuminating the sky on autumn and winter nights. Rovaniemi is almost directly on the Arctic Circle: that’s latitude 66° 32’ 35”.
