Rutland tourist information
Rutland is England’s smallest county and lies to the east of Leicestershire. With its undulating countryside, picturesque villages and beautiful reservoir, it is great place to relax and get away from it all.
At the heart of the county is Rutland Water, a large man-made lake offering many outdoor activities and places of interest. Rutland Watersports offers sailing, windsurfing and canoeing facilities, and the Rutland Belle runs regular boat trips throughout the summer months.
One of the best ways to see Rutland Water is to hire a bike and cycle around the shoreline. Rutland Water Cycling has a wide range of bikes for hire, including tandems and bikes for children. There are many alternative cycle routes, depending on your energy levels!
Gardeners will enjoy Geoff Hamilton’s famous Barnsdale Gardens, whilst bird lovers should head to the Anglian Bird Watching Centre at Egleton. The nature reserve here is home to the UK’s first ospreys hatched in England for 150 years and the British Birdwatching Fair is held here every August.
Rutland’s two towns, Oakham & Uppingham, are full of pretty honey-coloured buildings and interesting shops. Both are famous for their boarding schools, and in Oakham you can visit the Great Hall of the Norman castle whose walls are covered with horseshoes from visiting aristocracy over the centuries.
