The Grove Hotel description
German Object Artist Volker Kühn must have been pleasantly surprised when The Grove's interior designer, Martin Hulbert, happened to drop in to his exhibition at London 's Plus One Plus Two Gallery… and spontaneously purchased the entire collection of over 200 pieces. Now displayed in guest rooms, corridors and throughout the mansion, Kühn's work is best described as ‘a visual pun to intrigue the viewer and reward with the joy of solving a riddle'.
The art of The Grove includes many other pieces from different artists around the UK, including students, pieces from the Royal Academy Art Exhibition, Scottish and Irish Artists.
To link the interiors of The Grove to the wider landscape, architect Michael Balston picked up on the original designs of the 17th century and created a sympathetic 21st century garden. With his idea of the perfect garden being full of interconnected ideas, repeated rhythms and rich planting – like a Bach fugue – the Formal Gardens, Sunken Box Garden, Herbaceous Border and Walled Garden here at The Grove are a testament to his inspiration and talent.
The great outdoors has inspired some great outdoor sculptures from both sides of the Atlantic on display in the grounds at The Grove. American-born sculptor Gregory Ryan has designed the magnificent five panel aluminium Water Wall at the entrance to Sequoia as an accurate reproduction of the sea off the coast of Deauville, France. The piece embodies his signature technique of replicating dynamic surface patterns found in nature.
Way back in 1294, a certain John de Britwell conveyed land at 'The Manor on the Grove', although historians think the first substantial house on the site was Elizabethan. By 1703 the property became the right of inheritance to Sir William Buck of Hanby, who rebuilt the main and west wing.
In fact, the 'weekend in the country' was more or less invented at The Grove. Regular visitors such as Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Horace Walpole and Lord Palmerston would arrive on Saturday, returning to London on Monday morning. These illustrious guests were welcomed by the 4th Earl of Clarendon, whose family eventually left The Grove in 1920.
Our guest rooms and suites range from the luxurious to the truly palatial. Many have views over the formal gardens and golf course and most have a terrace or balcony. All are equipped with 42 inch plasma television screens, Broadband Internet access, splendidly stocked mini bars, air-conditioning and of course room service is always available. All just 40 minutes from central London.
In each of our three restaurants and bars you will find a blend of high quality ingredients and friendly service.
Dining at The Grove is also a movable feast. We can pack a picnic hamper, not forgetting the champagne, bring dishes out to our wide-open terraces or serve fresh home-grown salads in The Formal Garden.
Sequoia is more than a spa, more than a health club and more than a fitness centre. At Sequoia we ensure that your visit encompasses all your needs, dependent on your emotions, mind and physical aspects on the day of your experience with us. This helps to create a balance to your life and guides you in ways to enhance and improve the elements around you.
The Grove is part of the largest family-owned and run hotel group in the UK. We have a commitment to friendly, personal service and a resistance to overbearing corporate direction. Our other hotels, the five star Athenaeum in London's Piccadilly, the four-star Runnymede on the Thames near Windsor, and Greengarden House, our serviced apartments off Oxford Street, are one-offs, not me-too outposts of a faceless chain.
