Built on 3 acres of common land known as Handville Green in 1796 for the poor people of the parish. The building remained as a poorhouse until 1828 when it transferred to private ownership. At this point the outhouses were converted into cottages, one of these being used as a bakery and another as a beer shop. One part of what is now the restaurant was used as a chapel by the Wesleyan Methodists.Named as Waltham Court in 1909 the house remained as a private residence, surviving the 2nd World War when it was taken over by the army and the garden turned into a potato field in 1985 it openedas a restaurant with rooms. Further substantial investment has converted Waltham Court into a fine small, quality Hotel and Restaurant as it stands today.Waltham Court is set in some of the most beautiful countryside in Southern England, in the valley of the North Downs within the Weald of Kent. Only twelve minutes from the beautiful city of Canterbury and twenty minutes from the channel tunnel, we are ideally situated for the tourist and traveller or for those seeking a quiet hideaway for a relaxing break. Explore the many local byways on foot, by bicycle or on horseback, enjoy a round of golf at one of the many fine courses in the vicinity, all of which can be organised for you in advance of your arrival, or simply relax in our beautiful gardens.Our restaurant 'Chives' provides an interesting and varied menu in the modern British style offering a fusion of tastes and influences from around the globe with particular emphasis on fish and game dishes. We have a strong reputation for our vegetarian and vegan food, treating such customers with equal respect.All our spacious rooms are en-suite with colour television, radio alarm, hair-dryer, trouser press and tea and coffee making facilities, and have views overlooking the gardens or open countryside. We cater for parties, weddings and functions for up to seventy guests within the hotel, with the provision of a marquee in the grounds catering for up to 180 people. Seminars, meetings and conferences are easily accommodated, with overhead projection, flip chart, television and video facilities available.
