Gloucester England

Cradled by the picturesque Cotswold Hills and ideally located in the heart of the country, the city of Gloucester has a vibrant, lively atmosphere that combines a rich historic past with all the excitement of a modern city.

Gloucester was founded initially as a Roman fortress at Kingsholm. In the mid to late 60s a new fortress was built on the site of the modern city centre. The main east-west street is reflected in our modern street pattern (although the line is slightly different now). During the reign of Emperor Nerva, Gloucester was granted the title of Colonia Nerviana Glevensis. Colonia was the highest status a Roman provincial town could attain.

About AD 900 Queen Aethelflaeda, daughter of Alfred the Great, revitalised the town and the current street plan is a direct legacy. She also established a palace at Kingsholm and a church to house the bones of St Oswald. The ruins of that church incorporate the oldest surviving architecture above ground in the city.

Edward the Confessor had established the tradition of holding court at Christmas in Gloucester, a custom upheld by William the Conqueror. The Doomesday Book was commissioned following deliberations at the Christmas Parliament in 1085.
