Znojmo tourist information
A princely castle was built along the left bank of the Dyje River near the former Great-Moravian settlement before the middle of the 11th century. The St. Katerina´s Rotunda with valuable Romanesque murals, on which the Premyslides family is celebrated, was preserved to present day. The town was founded here in the first half of the 13th century. A Gothic tower of the Old Town Hall along with the Gothic parish Church of St. Mikulas, which date also from the Middle Ages, mark a dominant feature the town. The two-stories St. Vaclav´s Chapel, which dates from the beginning of the 16th century, along with baroque cloisters of Capuchins and Dominicans, ruins of medieval town ramparts and remarkable underground areas rank among a number of sights. As far as the modern architecture, it is also worth to mention a few monuments such as the evangelic church, which was built in the style of Viennese secession, a new-Renaissance theatre and the modern fresco made by the painter Husak, which is located in the Church of St. Jan Krtitel. Znojmo has become a nature centre of the region, which is famous for grapes cultivation. The traditional historic Viticulture Festival in Znojmo is considered to be the remarkable event not only for the town but also for the whole region. The Podyji National Park is located west from the town.
