Kemptville tourist information
Kemptville
The Village of Kemptville is located about five miles north-east of Carleton in northern Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. Kemptville is found by Pearl Lake and along the Tusket River. The Indian name for the Tusket river is Neketaouksit, which means "great forked tidal river".
Kemptville
The Town of Kemptville, like many other municipalities, was originally settled because of its location on the South Branch of the Rideau River, which was the power source for the first mills in the region. Many of the government centres, businesses and organizations which are associated with Kemptville, are actually located in the Township of Oxford-on-Rideau. It is, therefore, difficult to describe these communities separately.
The establishment, early in this century, of Kemptville College of Agricultural Technology and the G. Howard Ferguson Tree Nursery (both actually situated in Oxford-on-Rideau) emphasized Kemptville's role as the agriculture and natural resource centre of Eastern Ontario. This role was enhanced by development of some major suppliers to the agriculture industry, such as Eastern Breeders and Harvex. This role was further strengthened by the April 1, 1997 transfer of the College to the University of Guelph, which is expected to expand post-secondary educational opportunities in Eastern Ontario. The town's strategic location on a major auto route between Canada's capital and the United States border potentially places it in a strong position which, for various reasons, has not been realized.
