For centuries Banja Luka has seen visitors and conquerors. Even Roman legionnaires wrote of the unusual beauty of Banja Luka and her banks of the Vrbas. Castellum, a roman fort later fortified by the Ottomans, is the center of Banja Luka and a common place for children playing, artists drawing, old folk walking and talking, youth swimming and enjoying a drink at the cafe, and locals and foreigners alike dining in the forts restaurant. The legend and charm of the town has made many visitors into residents, which is why Banja Luka's population has grown tenfold in the past 50 years.
