Knokke Heist tourist information
Knokke-Heist may well be the result of a fusion between two towns, it still comprises two distinctive seaside resorts, each with their own very specific character. Knokke is the most glamorous resort on the Flemish coast, with expensive shops and exclusive galleries. Heist is a typical family tourist attraction, where simplicity and peace are still the key words.
A leisurely stroll along the Zeedijk or Kustlaan brings you automatically to the residential area The Zoute, where stylish white stately homes contrast with the green of carefully manicured gardens. The showpieces of this unique residential area are the golf course with twice 18 holes and the Butterfly Garden, a 425 m² large greenhouse, where 35 different types of butterflies can be admired in a setting of tropical flora. While you are there, you really should try Moeder Siska's waffles. They have a typical five hearts-shape and are simply succulent.
The nature reserve, The Zwin, is tucked between Knokke and the Dutch border. It is the silted-up former estuary that used to give access to the ports of Sluis, Damme and Brugge. Between the « salt marshes », that are flooded at high tide, and the « silt », which is only flooded during spring tide, grow remarkable salt-loving plants and live extraordinary molluscs. Highly knowledgeable guides will guide you safely on your walk through this unique area, where you can see a most unique assortment of bird-life, including storks and owls. When strolling through the Zwin, a pair of solid rubber boots is no luxury.
Knokke also has a famous Casino that does not only attract gamblers. Upon entering the casino, you will be overwhelmed by the enormous Venetian chandelier, reputedly the largest in the world. Art lovers will be thrilled with the mural paintings by René Magritte or the masterpieces by Delvaux, Lurçat and Keith Haring.
Every year cartoonists from more than 60 countries come to Knokke to participate in the International Cartoon Festival. From mid-June to the end of July, laughter is at the order in the cultural centre of Scharpoord where all cartoons about international current events are exhibited.
